High Voltage DC (HVDC) Converter Stations & Static Var Compensators (SVCs)

Whether located hundreds of miles apart and applied for Long Haul Power Transmission connected via overland tower lines or submarine cables, or applied back-to-back for grid synchronization, Tri-Technic is experienced in building and retrofitting HVDC Converter Stations.

We have completed Converter projects through 3,100MW at 500kV in the U.S. and we have demonstrated the capability to successfully complete projects into the largest MW and UHV ranges found in the world today.

Building & Retrofitting HVDC Converter Stations

Our capabilities also assure success in building or retrofitting SVCs, the HVDC Converter’s smaller cousin. Whether the application requires conventional thyristor valve converters or the newer Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) based converters, Tri-Technic is able and willing to provide these services and apply our expertise anywhere in the world.

Our expertise extends to all facets of building and retrofitting Converter Stations; including but not limited to:

  • Site preparation, including grading, site drainage, surfacing of all types, fencing and landscaping.
  • Civil works, including foundations, site underground and utility services, substructures and all related work.
  • Station buildings, including converter valve hall buildings, auxiliary buildings and control buildings including all related finishes, furnishings, building support and access control systems, and all related systems.
  • Electrical raceway systems, utility tunnels, cable trench, cable trays/ladders, conduits, ductbanks and related systems.
  • Grounding grid/counterpoise, and surge/lightning protection systems.
  • HVDC converter valves and related electrical apparatus, and associated support/suspension structures.
  • Converter transformers and all associated support equipment and systems.
  • Harmonic filter apparatus, live and dead tank breakers, disconnects and all related support structures and systems.
  • HVDC converter mechanical systems; valve cooling systems, raw water evaporative cooling towers with heat exchangers or fine water closed loop dry coolers; valve hall ventilation systems and associated ductwork; all related piping, valves, vessels, fine water treatment and deionizing, raw water treatment systems; all related control systems.
  • AC & DC bushings and buswork systems in valve halls, AC and DC yards, and filter yards; including rigid welded, strain bus, jumpers and all related terminals, fittings, supports and structures.
  • All Power and control cabling, high voltage, medium voltage, low voltages, fiber optic and all related splicing and terminations.
  • Balance of plant facilities, complete.
  • Sub-systems testing, commissioning and plant start-up.
  • We can provide complete construction QA and QC, but we also work very well, hand-in-hand with owners’ QA personnel and consultants.
